I am a little excited to have just discovered a NZ artist working with concepts I have been exploring in my designs for about 6 years now.

Jenna Shin's Artspace Stairwell Project (1973-) 2009-2011, the work in progress (and process) was conceived as a way of drawing attention to what is essentially a transitional space between the outside world beyond the stairwell (and that peeks in through the windows) and the gallery above.

This notion of inside and outside, fold and unfold is indelibly marked within Shin’s abstraction, where an exploration of the ambiguities of spatial properties by way of finely nuanced colour gradations, geometric symmetry/asymmetry and layering is played out. It is by unsettling or toying with our perceptions of these traditionally conceived binary states that Shin’s Stairwell Project hints towards the permeability of space and the structures within it. Shin utilises not only the existing and altered structures but the natural properties of light spilling in through the windows to lend additional resonance, making each visit an experience of subtle perceptual change.

It's fascinating stuff she is working with, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of her work in person...

This is SUCH a great idea, found on my all time favourite blog, This is Glamorous... I can't wait to try it, might have to throw a party just so I can make cupcakes with these on top!

{you will need:}

plastic animals
plastic candle holders
drill with 1/8″ drill bit
pliers
gold spray paint

......................................................................................................

{steps:}

1. use any type of plastic animal you can find, keeping in mind the size of the cake or cupcake you are planning to top; ones with a flat back work best

2. with the pliers, hold the animal steady, and drill a hole straight down, being careful not to come out the other side; the hole only has to be deep enough for the candle holder to fit

3. spray paint the animals in a few light coats, rotating them to cover all sides; note: gold/metallic spray paint will work fine without primer, but if you are using regular spray paint for colour variations, be certain to use a plastic spray paint or a primer for plastic, and always test one first

4. spray the candle holders to match

5. put on your dancing shoes & pop open the champagne

I have long been interested in the area where spirituality and Architecture meet - the notion of the Sublime and the overwhelming sense of awe one experiences when entering these spiritual spaces. Panteón Nube is Spain is a stunning example of this.

From architizer.com -

Death inspires human beings with something between mystery and fear. To die means a transition between this world and others that nobody knows. The tomb is where this transition takes place.

According to this situation, tombs should be closed forever, and their doors should never be opened. It should be impossible to open them, even if you want, so there are no handles or locks. The doors insert themselves in the walls, merging together. Therefore, the entrances are secret, just like the transits that occur inside. In fact, the façade can be only opened in a specific way, almost a combination that only the owner knows.

Inside we find a cloud that gets crossed by sunbeams: an atmospheric situation that can be found in the nature and that, linked to our cultural references of the Divine, stimulate our spiritual side. That moment gets crystallized in the abstraction of the white cloud, the end of a way that, starting from the basement ascends to the intermediate platform and goes on until the cloud’s space, where our sight gets lost in the abstract and unreal atmosphere that fills the place.

I love the juxtapositions in a piece like this... the smooth against rough, man made and natural, the rugged and gnarled against polished, transparent and solid...

OK, so at first I thought this was just a joke, but here is one of McDonalds' surprising and fun concepts - an upmarket temporary McDonald’s store that launches at Fashion Weeks around the globe — London, New York, Paris, Milan, Sydney, Hong Kong. Part art installation, part gathering spot and, of course, a restaurant that offers a traditional McDonald’s menu, it is packaged in a way that makes a playful yet stylish nod to the lifestyle of the highly desirable, influential consumers that attend Fashion Weeks. I think it's hilarious, but love it at the same time!

How amazing would it be to own a piece of land so remote that when designing a home to put on it you dont even have to take the issue of privacy into account?

This glass house, The Williams studio, situated on Stony Lake in Canada, is a photographer's home and studio.

Designed by GH3 the brief included simplicity, open spaces and a unity between exterior and interior spaces. The double-height space provides the photographer owner with unparalleled light and natural illumination, while the 360 degree glass backdrop provides an ever-changing backdrop with nature.

Sitting jutted out over the water's edge, the entire building appears to almost float over the water when inside.

Although it looks like a literal ice box in winter, the architects considered inclusion of granite's thermal mass that saps up the sun allows it to remain warm.

The mezzanine floor houses the bedroom, bathroom and closet which can be concealed from the rest of the space by sliding glass. White lacquered panels with reflective qualities diffuse light in every part of the interior, making it the perfect canvas for artwork, and the perfect space for photography...

although this is taken from a blog on the other side of the world where it is summer, my heart still belongs to summertime and I can but dream....

c a m p a r i - c i t r u s s o r b e t grapefruit, makes 1.5 quarts 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 3 cups grapefruit juice 1/2 cup campari Mix the water and sugar together in a small pan over a low heat, bringing to boil until the sugar dissolves. Allow the simple syrup to boil for exactly 4 minutes (this will give the sorbet the best consistency). Remove from heat and cool (makes a little over 1 cup). Combine the citrus juice and Campari and add 1 cup of the cooled syrup. Adjust to taste -- want to add a tablespoon or two extra syrup if you prefer it less tart. Remember, the mixture will taste slightly sweeter in liquid form than it does when frozen. Freeze in an ice cream machine according to manufacturer’s directions {if you do not have an ice cream machine, they also make perfect popsicles}. After churning, allow sorbet to set in the freezer at least two hours.

always been an advocate of juxtaposition in my designs, my heart melts at a beautiful, sparkling chandelier on a rough, raw concrete backrop.

The Concrete Wall collection is the result of photographing raw and refined concrete walls, raw cinder block walls and even graffiti, in locations across Norway. The imagery used in this unique wallpaper is based on high-resolution photography and custom manipulation. No pattern is ever repeated, something that results in a very realistic finish. some of my favourite buildings and architects are in singapore. here is one i just discovered this morning on architizer ...

i just love the way the historic and the modern work together and compliment each other. Many historic elements were left untouched in the 306 m² space, retaining the site’s historical essence and providing a quaint contrast to the unit’s modern interior.

What distinguishes this conservation house from most others is the unorthodox first floor layout which places the kitchen and dining space right at the entrance. This was done in light of the fact that most parties centre around the food, and this arrangement allows guests to casually mingle with their hosts as they cook.

Since the house was meant for rental, a neutral colour palette was used to suit changing tastes between individual tenants. Bamboo is a recurrent theme throughout the house, from the forecourt garden to the sand-blasted motifs within.

31 Blair Road is an innovative response to the constraints of conservation building, successfully marrying the old with the new to create a charming living space.

A week out, every day my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Christchurch, enduring the wrath of such a devastating earthquake. I'm not sure what's going on in the world right now - it seems as if it's just one natural disaster after another... It is a sobering reminder that we walk a tenuous line, in this life we lead and on this earth we inhabit... Every day is a gift - and every breath that we take is an honour. As I sit here watching buildings reduced to rubble and people in despair - I'm reminded of the fragility of life, reminded to be grateful for the beauty that surrounds me... And thankful for every hour that I get to spend doing the things that I love the most...
